Building futures: US Department of Labor promotes safety to newest generation of construction workers in Southeast’s largest student career event
Atlanta, February 13, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is set to welcome thousands of students from Georgia’s middle, high, and tech schools to the 2024 Construction Ready Career Expo in Atlanta. This event aims to highlight the importance of on-the-job safety to the next generation of workers in the construction industry.
Careers in Construction and Related Fields
The Construction Ready Career Expo, held at the Georgia World Congress Center from February 22-23, will focus on careers in construction and related fields. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore specialties such as safety, highway construction, electrical contracting, energy, drywall, tile, roofing, and more. The expo will feature exhibits showcasing machinery and tools, and industry professionals will be available to answer questions about career options and the skills needed in different industry sectors.
According to OSHA Regional Administrator Kurt Petermeyer, participating in this event is a great way for students to gain exposure to careers in skilled trades. It also provides OSHA with an excellent opportunity to partner with industry leaders and educators in shaping the future of the construction workforce.
Promoting Youth Safety
OSHA’s presence at the Construction Ready Career Expo is part of their Youth Worker Initiative, which aims to provide information and resources to teenagers, parents, educators, and employers to ensure safe and rewarding work experiences for young employees. If you are a teen or a parent looking for more information on workplace safety for teens, visit OSHA’s website and explore their resources on young workers.
Simulated Construction Site
In addition to students, the expo also welcomes teachers, school administrators, parents, industry experts, and volunteers. The event is designed as a simulated construction site, and all attendees are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including a hard hat, safety glasses, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. The expo expects to attract over 9,000 attendees, and safety will be closely supervised by industry professionals.
Employer Responsibility
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA plays a crucial role in enforcing workplace safety regulations and promoting awareness among employers and workers alike. To learn more about OSHA’s mission and resources, visit their website.
